The factory in Guangdong had been completing overseas orders for the flag of the Tibetan government-in-exile.

Workers said they thought they were just making colourful flags and did not realise their meaning.

But then some of them saw TV images of protesters holding the emblem and they alerted the authorities, according to Hong Kong’s Ming Pao newspaper.

Tibet independence

The factory owner reportedly told police the emblems had been ordered from outside China, and he did not know that they stood for an independent Tibet.

Workers who had grown suspicious checked the meaning of the flag by going online.

Thousands of flags had already been packed for shipping.

Police believe that some may already have been sent overseas, and could appear in Hong Kong during the Olympic torch relay there this week.

The authorities have now stepped up the inspection of cars heading to the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and onwards to Hong Kong.

The Olympic torch is due to tour Hong Kong on Friday. It will then travel to a series of cities in mainland China before reaching Beijing for the start of the Olympic Games in August.

Its progress around the world has been marked by pro-Tibet demonstrations in several cities – including Paris, London and San Francisco.

Rallies began in the main Tibetan city of Lhasa on 10 March, led by Buddhist monks.

Over the following week protests spread and became violent – particularly in Lhasa, where ethnic Chinese were targeted and shops were burnt down.

Beijing cracked down on the protesters with force, sending in hundreds of troops to regain control of the restive areas.

But it has since agreed to resume talks with representatives of the Dalai Lama.

- Fiscales del estado de Carolina del Sur (EE.UU.) pidieron hoy ante un tribunal federal una evaluación psicológica para un joven que amenazó con causar una explosión en su escuela para morir, ir al cielo y entonces matar a Jesús.

Tras ser arrestado el pasado 19 de abril Ryan Schallenberger, de 18 años, dijo que quería morir para ir al cielo y allí matar a Jesús, según los fiscales.

Añadieron que esas declaraciones eran una indicación de que el muchacho necesita una evaluación psicológica.

“Su conducta es extraña. Es evidente que su comportamiento debe ser evaluado”, señaló el fiscal Buddy Bethea ante el juez.

Schallenberger podría ser acusado de conspirar para usar un arma de destrucción masiva, cargo que conlleva cadena perpetua. Durante una audiencia el agente Craig Townsend, de la Oficina de Alcoholes, Tabaco, Armas de Fuego y Explosivos, manifestó que el muchacho dijo a uno de los alguaciles que lo arresto que quería morir.

“Dijo que la muerte era mejor que la vida. Manifestó que quería morir, ir al cielo y una vez allí quería matar a Jesús”, agregó.

Schallenberger fue arrestado después de que sus padres recogieron en el correo un paquete dirigido al muchacho que contenía nitrato de amonio.

Al buscar en su habitación encontraron una grabación que Ryan deseaba que se escuchara después de su muerte.

También hallaron un diario en el que el joven comentaba sus experimentos con explosivos.

Filomena Gómez falleció de cáncer hace dos años, cuando tenía 55. Ahora, y según su familia, lleva una semana comunicándose con ellos a través del móvil y pidiendo que le quiten del pecho la cruz con la que fue enterrada. Por esta razón, su familia acudió al juzgado de guardia de Granada para solicitar un permiso y poder exhumar sus restos. El juez, atónito, atendió a los familiares de Filomena y escuchó los sonidos grabados en el móvil, «procedentes de ultratumba». La hija asegura que su madre dice: «Ven, ven, la cruz». El juez les remitió a un cura porque el caso excede de su competencia.
